PORCH VIEW DANCES

Real People Dancing in Real Spaces

Saturday, September 16th & Sunday, September 17th 2017

Kaeja d’Dance, Toronto’s cutting-edge contemporary dance company, returns to bring professional danceartists together with ordinary citizens to create a truly magical outdoor event in the King East neighbourhood in the heart of Kitchener.

Porch View Dances is an innovative dance festival, engaging members of local communities across Ontario since 2012. Conceived by Karen Kaeja and developed with Allen Kaeja, PVD celebrates through dance the stories that tie our community together. Performed by local non-dancer residents on their porches, and in the front- and back- yards of their own homes. Porch View Dances Kitchener includes choreographic commissions by Artistic Directors Karen and Allen Kaeja, along with Natasha Mansell and Augustine Wigle of Kitchener-Waterloo’s Contemporary School of Dance. This year’s PVD will also feature live choral musical accompaniment, arranged and performed by Kitchener-based musician Sarah Pearson!

The audience is guided from dwelling to dwelling, watching the stories of a neighbourhood unfold. The event culminates at the Kitchener Market, where the audience joins in a group dance. Porch View Dances first came to the King East neighbourhood in June of 2016, welcoming over 200 audience members as they wound their way through the streets. The King East Neighbourhood Association (KENA) was recognized with a Kitchener Festival of Neighbourhoods Arts and Culture Award for the event, prompting community organizers to approach The Registry Theatre to bring PVD back in 2017; JM Drama Alumni (operators of The Registry Theatre) was able to secure a grant from the Ontario Arts Council’s Ontario Dances program to make it possible!

Since 1991, Kaeja d’Dance has created award-winning contemporary dance performances, site-specific works with large numbers of dancers, acclaimed dance films, and community engagement programs. They break ground, instigate risk and bring together dancers and collaborators to create experiences both on and off the stage, in local and international communities, with over 140 original works including commissions in Canada and abroad. While Kaeja d’Dance’s signature aesthetic is known for its athletic intensity, sensual articulation, and theatrical imagery, it is also marked by Karen and Allen’s distinctly individual sensibilities.
